Envoy Air Infant Policy: Travel Rules, Fees & Seating Guidelines

Envoy Air Infant Policy

Envoy Air (American Eagle) Infant Policy: Traveling with an infant can be a complex logistical challenge. As a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines, Envoy Air follows the standard American Airlines Child and Infant Policies. This guide provides an exhaustive look at everything you need to know for a smooth journey.

Quick Summary: Infants under 2 years old can fly on an adult's lap for free domestically. For international travel, taxes and 10% of the adult fare usually apply.

1. Age and Eligibility Requirements

Envoy Air welcomes the youngest travelers, but safety protocols dictate strict age limits for newborns.

  • Minimum Age: Infants can fly as young as 2 days old.
  • Medical Clearance: If an infant is less than 7 days old, a physician’s letter is mandatory. This letter must state that the infant is medically cleared for air travel.
  • Age Cap: The "infant" designation applies only to children under the age of 2 (24 months). Once a child turns 2, they must occupy their own purchased seat.

2. Lap Infant vs. Ticketed Seat

Parents have two primary options when booking travel for a child under 2 years of age.

A. Lap Infants

The most common choice for domestic travel, lap infants sit on the lap of a ticketed adult (16 years or older).

  • Domestic Flights: There is no charge for a lap infant on flights within the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
  • International Flights: You must still add the infant to your reservation. Usually, you will pay the taxes for the infant and approximately 10% of the adult fare.
  • Limit: Only one lap infant is allowed per adult. If one adult is traveling with two infants, the second infant must have a purchased seat.

B. Ticketed Infants (Purchasing a Seat)

If you prefer more space or wish to use a car seat, you may purchase a seat for your infant at the standard adult fare.

  • Safety: The FAA and Envoy Air strongly recommend that infants be secured in an approved Child Restraint System (CRS).
  • Booking: When you buy a seat, the infant is entitled to the same baggage allowance as an adult passenger.

3. Baggage and Equipment Allowances

Envoy Air is generous regarding essential baby gear. Most baby items do not count toward your standard baggage limit.

Item Fee Policy Details
Stroller Free 1 per child. Can be gate-checked or checked at the counter.
Car Seat Free 1 per child. Can be used onboard (if a seat is bought) or checked.
Diaper Bag Free 1 per child. Does not count as your personal item/carry-on.
Breast Pump Free Considered a medical device; not part of carry-on limits.

Important Note on Large Strollers:

Strollers weighing over 20 lbs (9 kg) or non-collapsible strollers must be checked at the ticket counter. Only small, collapsible "umbrella" strollers are typically allowed to be gate-checked on Envoy Air’s smaller regional jets (like the Embraer 170/175).

4. Child Restraint Systems (CRS) & Safety Seats

If you have purchased a seat for your infant, or if there is an empty seat next to you (at the crew's discretion), you may use a car seat.

  • FAA Approval: The seat must have a label stating: "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft."
  • Dimensions: Most Envoy Air seats have a width of approximately 17–18 inches. Ensure your CRS is no wider than 16 inches to guarantee a fit.
  • Prohibited Seats: Booster seats, vests, and "belly belts" (which attach the infant to the adult’s seatbelt) are not permitted during taxi, takeoff, or landing.

5. In-Flight Amenities

Regional flights on Envoy Air involve smaller cabins, so amenities differ from mainline American Airlines flights.

  • Changing Tables: Most Envoy Air Embraer 175 aircraft are equipped with a changing table in at least one lavatory. It is best to change diapers right before boarding.
  • Bassinets: Unlike long-haul international flights, Envoy Air regional flights do not offer onboard bassinets.
  • Milk and Formula: Flight attendants can provide warm water to help heat a bottle, but they cannot refrigerate milk or formula for you.

6. Identification Requirements

While children under 18 do not need ID for domestic travel, Envoy Air may request proof of age for "lap infants" to ensure they are under 2.

  • Birth Certificate: It is highly recommended to carry a copy of the child’s birth certificate.
  • Passports: Required for all international travel, regardless of age.

7. Travel Tips for Envoy Air Passengers

Since Envoy Air operates regional jets, overhead bin space is very limited. "Valet" tagging is common, meaning you leave your larger carry-ons on the jet bridge and pick them up immediately upon deplaning.

Pro-Tip: Always keep essential infant supplies (diapers, wipes, formula) in a smaller bag that fits under the seat in front of you, as you may not have access to the overhead bin during flight.
