When you're looking at your boarding pass and see "Piedmont Airlines," it’s common to feel a bit confused about whose rules you’re supposed to follow. Piedmont is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines, meaning they operate as American Eagle. Because they don't sell their own independent tickets, the Piedmont Airlines flight change policy is actually the American Airlines policy.

Whether you're trying to move a flight up by a day or push a trip back a month, understanding the relationship between Piedmont and American is the key to avoiding unnecessary fees.


The Golden Rule: It's All About American Airlines

Since Piedmont operates exclusively for American, you won't find a "Piedmont-specific" customer service desk for changing your flights. Every change, refund request, or rescheduling effort goes through the American Airlines system.

The flexibility of your ticket—and how much it will cost to change it—depends entirely on the fare class you booked through American.


Change Fees: The New Industry Standard

In a major shift that started a few years ago and remains the standard , American Airlines (and by extension, Piedmont) eliminated most change fees for domestic travel.

No Change Fees

If you are flying within the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean, you generally do not have to pay a flat change fee if you booked:

  • Elite Status Perks: If you are an AAdvantage Executive Platinum, Platinum Pro, or Platinum member, same-day confirmed changes are complimentary.

  • The Standby Option: If you don't want to pay the $60, you can often "standby" for an earlier flight for free. You won't have a guaranteed seat until the gate agent calls your name, but it’s a great way to save money if the flight isn't full.


The 24-Hour Refund Window

Regardless of your fare type—even Basic Economy—federal law provides a safety net. If you booked your flight at least two days before departure, you can change or cancel your reservation for a full refund within 24 hours of booking.

This is particularly helpful if you notice a typo in your name or realize you selected the wrong date immediately after clicking "Confirm."


Managing Your Change: Step-by-Step

Because Piedmont is integrated into the American system, you can handle most changes digitally.

  1. Locate Your Record Locator: This is the 6-character alphanumeric code in your confirmation email.

  2. Visit AA.com or the App: Go to "Your Trips" and enter your details.

  3. Select "Change Trip": If your fare allows it, you’ll see an option to modify your dates or cities.

  4. Compare Costs: The system will show you the "Add-on" cost (the fare difference) for various flights.

  5. Finalize: Once you pay the difference, your ticket is reissued instantly.


Schedule Changes by the Airline

Sometimes, Piedmont (American) will change the flight time on you. If the airline initiates a change that alters your arrival or departure by more than 4 hours (or sometimes as little as 90 minutes depending on the current internal policy), you are entitled to:

  • Change to a different flight/date for free (no fare difference).

  • A full refund to your original payment method if the new schedule doesn't work for your plans.
